I like Matt Smith. I like every Doctor in fact. Each actor brings something new to the role that makes their performance special. I have seen every Doctor in action from both classic and the new series. My list of favourites would be the in the following order:

Tom Baker

David Tennant

Matt Smith

Jon Pertwee

Sylvester McCoy

William Hartnell

Patrick Troughton

Paul McGann

Colin Baker

Peter Davison

Christopher Eccleston

Richard Hurndall *

* Richard Hurndall being last on my list does not distract from his extraordinary performance of replicating William Hartnell's first doctor persona in the classic story - the Five Doctors. I just rate the other actors higher in personal preference is all.

Well, first I'll answer your question about the quote you mentioned: Hartnell's Doctor, though not in appearance, was much younger than Smith's Doctor. The First Doctor was around 200 or so, whereas the Eleventh Doctor is over 1000 years old.

I don't think Matt Smith has ruined Doctor Who. He's one of my favorite Doctors, actually. I know a lot of people, especially fans of the new show specifically, had a hard time letting go of Tennant's Doctor (you perhaps being one of them seeing he's so high on your list), and may not have been seeing Smith's Doctor in the fairest light.

The Eleventh Doctor seems so much more alien than Tennant's, or even Eccleston's Doctors, and has personality quirks that seem to hark back to classic Doctors. He's fun but he can still teach you so much.

Aside from my personal opinion, it was Matt Smith that has brought Doctor Who to America as more than the cult show that it was in the 80's. So, I don't believe he has ruined Doctor Who. If anything has, it's the writing he's given (though I don't agree with that), as some people believe it just isn't as good as it used to be.

I don't mind Matt Smith, he is quite good. What annoys me with the new series (Ecclestone onwards) is that the companions have taken on a much bigger and longer role. After all it is Dr Who not the Doctor and Rose or the Doctor with Amy. I note you have Paul McGann there after his doing a telemovie but no mention of Peter Cushing who did two Dr Who movies.

My ratings would be be Tennant, Troughton, Tom Baker, Pertwee, Hartnell, Smith, Ecclestone, Colin Baker, Davison, McCoy.

Who do you think his best companion has been?

Personally I think Matt Smith is becoming one of the stronger Doctors. He's brought back the otherworldliness that was lacking with Tennant. At first I did find Smith's youthfulness jarring, but he's played the role with such authority that any worries on that front have been banished. When you say he's not very like the Doctor, there's never been two incarnations alike. I know what you mean though as I thought Christopher Eccleston was miscast when the show was revived. My Doctor didn't wear a leather jacket and jeans and walk around like an action hero, my doctor was a oddly dressed eccentric in a blue box.

But I have a lot of time for Matt Smith. I think he's very reminiscent of Patrick Troughton which is no bad thing. When he says 'the daft old man who stole the blue box' he's referring to himself in the third person and I don't think he's directly referencing Hartnell's incarnation, more of the fact he's 900 years old. Besides, that's an issue with the script writer rather than Smith's portrayal.

I think Matt Smith is alright in my opinion. I also thought Colin Baker was alright. as they are your two lowest ones on the list.

My favorite personally is David Tennant.

I could go on and on telling you how Matt has not ruined the show....but long story short, I think he is good at playing the Doctor.

Matt Smith has become my personal favorite Doctor. SO, no I don't think he's ruined the show. But I'm very sorry that you don't like his interpretation. And yeah, when he mentions the man who stole the TARDIS... he's talking about himself. Why is that confusing?

Also, Matt Smith has signed on for another season. Sorry. But maybe you'll like his chemistry with the new companion better?
