Kal Penn is leaving the show "House" to work in the White House (or at least, in the Old Executive Office building next door). The actor, best known for his role in "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle," tells Entertainment Weekly :

I understand it was your decision to leave House. True? KAL PENN: Yes. I was incredibly honored a couple of months ago to get the opportunity to go work in the White House. I got to know the President and some of the staff during the campaign and had expressed interest in working there, so I'm going to be the associate director in the White House office of public liaison. They do outreach with the American public and with different organizations. They're basically the front door of the White House. They take out all of the red tape that falls between the general public and the White House. It's similar to what I was doing on the campaign.

In fall 2007, Modi joined the cast of the Fox medical drama House as a fellowship applicant. E! reported that Penn had signed on as a regular on the show along with Olivia Wilde and Peter Jacobson and this was confirmed in the plot of the episode "Games". Modi continued with the series through to the episode "Simple Explanation", which aired April 6, 2009. He made an additional appearance as Kutner on the fifth season finale, "Both Sides Now", that aired on May 11, 2009. However, due to his new job at the White House, Kal Modi could not be present for the filming of this episode. The clip of him saying "Too bad it isn't true" was taken from a previous filming.

actually, that episode had not yet been shown here in the Philippines (but we are currently on season 5), accidentally I found out the news on wiki while searching for the diagnosis on past episodes. I had searched for the reason because I liked Kal Penn as Dr. Lawrence Kutner and didn't want him to live the show but according to what I had read also on Yahoo Answer, read the entry on the source below. Hope you get your answer and I hope House fans would do too.

Perhaps they never will explain it. That's what real life is like sometimes - you just don't have an answer. I think that explanation would make more sense. Most people don't leave a suicide note. Kal Penn is alive and well and will continue to get plenty of work.

I think the drama comes when House pretty much outed Taub for trying to kill himself in the past....perhaps this will be a story arc. Perhaps we'll see the grief counselor next week.

Umm, in the very end we see House looking at a single picture of Kutner really sad, when he probably didn't notice a picture being taken of him

and then he looks in the mirror

he's just lonely, completely lonely

and House looked in the mirror, pretty much what he is as well

but then again House did have Wilson

Kutner was all, all alone.

And then you have Taub acting all weird and the whole sick dog thing (what dog?...)

So....I don't know. I'm more convinced that in the end House understood it WAS a suicide, but if not, I think it's Taub who killed him

for being a young success. And Taub is bitter and ewwy.

I'm not sure exactly why the character killed himself yet.

But Kal is still alive people! Here is an article I read that is from the official fox-house website, interviewing the writer of the show. It explains that Kal accepted a position at the white house as associate director in the White House office of public liaison. It also answers a lot of other questions and clears up some more things, so read it and it will help: http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2009/04/house-exclusive.html

I think depression and personal problems got him, House mentioned that their adoptive parents only buried his problems with happiness and never really dealt with it so I guess he couldn't take it anymore.

At first I thought he was murdered but at the end, House find a stash of Kutner's pictures and in one of them he looks sad, so far all proof states the he kill himself.

Too bad, he was a cool character.

Is not like the writers didn't want him, I think the actor found a better work offer

Kal Penn (who plays Kutner) took a job at the White House. And I'm not joking. It was Kal's decision to leave.

The actor Kal Penn was offered Associate Director under Obama's White House.

From Wikipedia:

In early 2009, Penn was offered the position of Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Liaison in the Obama administration, which he accepted, necessitating that his House character be "killed off".

We can only explore possibilities until the next episode. But, as for me, I suspect Foreman and Hudley knows more than they are letting on. Their "knowing" looks at each other are very telling. Maybe they have secreted evidence of sort that will shed light to the reason of Kutner's death.

If killed, the killers must be the persons Kutner recognized as his parents killers.

Penn Quits Acting For The White House

7 April 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

American actor/producer Kal Penn has left hit TV show House to work for U.S. President Barack Obama.

The 31-year-old actor has accepted a position as the associate director in the White House's Office of Public Liaison & Intergovernmental Affairs.

Penn - also known for his role in stoner comedy Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle - was written out of the TV drama in an episode that aired in the U.S. on Monday.

And he's preparing to leave acting behind for good even though the salary for the government job is far less than the money he makes from his career on screen.

He tells Entertainment Weekly, "(The Office of Public Liaison & Intergovernmental Affairs) do outreach with the American public and with different organisations. They're basically the front door of the White House. They take out all of the red tape that falls between the general public and the White House.

"I love what I do as an actor. I couldn't love it more. But probably from the time I was a kid, I really enjoyed that balance between the arts and public service. I thought this might be the right time to go off and do something else.

"There's not a lot of financial reward in these jobs. Obviously, the opportunity to serve in a capacity like this is an incredible honor."

Penn is currently working on a graduate certificate in international security from California's prestigious Stanford University.

He also campaigned for Obama last year as a member of his National Arts Policy Committee.

I really was surprised that they would kill him off. I thought Foreman could save him in time, but I guess not... I thought that he might have been cleaning his gun and looking in the barrel when it accidentally fired. The only problem with this theory is that they showed Kutner sad at the end and they ran a Public Service Announcement right after. Anyway, you should visit his page as it has notes from all the cast members on his ''death''.
2009-04-06 18:12:28 UTC
Nobody knows, but I'm fairly certain that (if he wasn't murdered) he killed himself because no one seemed to care about him anymore. There comes a time when even an eternal optomist is miserable, and for Kutner...maybe that was too much.

Personally I was shocked and sad that he is off the show.

I got to meet Kal Penn this past January at the SAG awards.

I told him that at first I was upset about the new characters on House, that inclued him, but now? He said "but now you've grown to love us, right?" I said, yes I have!

Wow! Was that really necessary! He was one of my favorite characters. I guess House doesn't want to share the spotlight espically with someone who urinates on his chair. We miss you Kutner. That was just plain senseless:(
2009-04-06 18:12:52 UTC
They didn't actually tell us why! (I know, so frustrating!)

But the last thing we saw was House looking at a picture of Kutner looking sad. After looking through many pictures of Kutner looking really happy, I think that that photo finally showed us that he was actually sad but he kept a very convincing facade. The photo gave us some closure because it proved to House that Kutner was actually sad beneath his happy exterior. I'm so sad that he died :(

Kal Penn did not actually in real life. Sometimes when they write out a character, they have other shows or movies that they are directing or acting in or anything else where they would have to leave the show. But in House, i think Kutner was murdered by Foreman. Im prolly wrong tho.

Uhm, I think the actor playing Kutner asked for a raise (in RL), thinking that he has become an asset to the show. I would not worry about him tho, he has a bright future.

House producers have been very aggressive when it comes to controlling the cast, that's why the first team got marginalized and replaced, yet still there playing ridiculously unimportant roles, bound by iron clad contract. They tried to pull "Friends" style of negotiations and got shut down. Forman is the one who caved, which is not surprising, worst actors always do.

Sorry to burst the bubble, but it's an ugly world there behind the scenes.

We don't know for sure. Everyone thinks it was depression without symptoms that no one caught. Originally house said it was because he didn't know who he was since he was adopted and took his adoptive parents name. Later he changed the theory to murder.

It will be expanded on in the next episode.

He might have been murdered. He saw his parents die after they were shot in India, so he was adopted in America, so that could have been a reason he killed himself.
