from what i could gather, Arthur is dead (in that time) but will be reincarnated in the future when the world needs him again. And Merlin (at the end) - its showing that he is waiting for his friend to be reborn again so that he can protect him like he did in the past that's why he's still waiting at Avalon where he left Arthur to rest. I think that the van is just symbolising the passage of time into the modern world and that merlin is still waiting..

No I was not happy with the ending, i knew it was going to end that way from the number of adaptations of the legend over the years but i had hoped that they would give a different take but...i was disappointed :(

Oh Dear, I know I', a bit late commenting. It's great to read everone's opinion. I was really heartbroken (siily really) that it finished at all and the way it did. It was my most favourite series of all time and I really do miss it. It upset me so much I haven't bought series 5 yet but I will now. I do need a complete set. I like what Yasmin said below. (That's a good version me thinks) Also., practically, I guess all the actors need to move on, you can't stay locked in a series for ever.

Boy I do miss it though. I would have loved to have seen Merlin and Arthur continue their relationship with Arthur knowing he was a real wizard etc, that brings a whole new ball game of another series.

Long Live Merlin and I do hope it comes back one day.

I actually liked the ending. Some consider the Legends to be true so changing it to suit a TV show would be unfitting.

Also if they 'all lived happily ever after' then it would have been too boring and forgettable, the official ending had more of an emotional impact on the watcher.

Isn't it more magical with Arthur being 'Jesus like' being able to rise again in Britain's time of need rather than just living a normal life. I also found it touching knowing Merlin lived on and is still waiting for his Best Friend to return hundreds of years after his death.

In the end they were Legends, that live on forever. Not just some King and Magician that live happily ever after. I don't know why people are making a big song and dance about the ending.

Arthur and Merlin are destiny, they live on.

(Yasmin explained the ending perfectly)

The 'ending' wasn't an ending - quite apart from the fact that the TV series has gone completely away from the original legend.

Leaving him as a tramp, wandering around the back lanes of Glastonbury, was a tad odd to say the least. But it's only a TV story after all. I don't think the ending needs explaining really - it's up to the individual to see it as they want.

For me Merlin was never a young man, to begin with (well he was, but not as Arthur's magician). This was just their slant on the Camelot thing.

Add - Some brilliant answers /explanations, on the question link above. I especially liked Jasmine's explanation!

I CAN'T believe it's finished!

I have always loved the series and I always will - sighh

Well in the end Arthur is dead - but Merlin is still waiting and waiting for Arthur to rise again as the Dragon foretold!

I CAN'T BELIEVE ARTHUR'S DEAD , WHY DID GWAIN HAVE TO DIE - WHY DOES MERLIN HAVE TO BE LEFT ALL ALONE

why why why

Loved the emotional scene between Arthur and Merlin though - glad Arthur accepted Merlin for who he is, their friendship is just so beautiful!

'Nothing, nothing will ever be as tragically, beautifully heartbreaking as Merlin and Arthur's relationship'.

From a heartbroken Merlin Fan!

The ending was awful.I love Merlin and i was kind of expecting a high climax ending. But all we got was a lot of pausing and a rubbish story line. What I hated the most was the amount of time Merlin took to kill Morgana,I mean Morgana's supposed to be there number one enemy who they haven't defeated all this time and Merlin takes less than 5 sec to do it.What's more did Arthur really have to die like that?

The story should have been more twisted like Morgana saying that she'll take all the magic with her when she dies and Arthur sacrifices himself to save the magic or something.I want a remake of this episode seriously

Honestly, I would've preferred it if they didn't show the 'truck' and at a modern setting.. coz if they were to make a continuation of it, the modern setting would be boring, I prefer the medieval one.. but I'd still watch it anyway.. and I would've wanted to see Merlin came back to Camelot.. I will Miss them.. alot!

It felt like Merlin was alone in the world.. He didn't even have a loved one.. :(

I'm fascinated by numerology. I strongly believe that numbers reflect certain aptitudes and character tendencies, as an integral part of the cosmic plan. Each letter has a numeric value that provides a related cosmic vibration. The sum of the numbers in your birth date and the sum of value derived from the letters in the name provide an interrelation of vibrations. These numbers show a great deal about character, purpose in life, what motivates, and where talents may lie.

I really hated the ending! It was really rushed and i was repeatedly saying 'What?' Arthur died because of the sword lodged in his chest. Merlin lives on forever felling the emptiness in his heart.

Someone asked a similar question to yours, and it has a few answers which I think are pretty plausible.
