I watched an episode of the CW show "Supernatural" last week and thought it was a really awesome show. I noticed that there is lots of discussion about demons and the apocalypse on the show. I was wondering if someone who has been following Supernatural for a while could comment on the religious element in the show. Is it okay for someone who is a serious Catholic? I'm thinking about buying some of the seasons on Bluray and I just wanted to make sure that I wouldn't feel bad watching them.

There are pagan gods and witchcraft, yes, but they aren't shown in a good light (most of the time). God and the Angels are very old testament. They're soldiers, not guardians. God is out of the picture but seeing as how we haven't seen him, one can't say whether or not if he is truly friend or foe.

My dad loves the show and he takes the bible very seriously. He had problems with some of the religious aspects, such as the fact that Lucifer "doesn't lie" or the fact that the Angels torture, but the story has drawn him in so that he's still hooked regardless of his religious disagreements.

If it makes you feel any better, for seasons 1-2 they had a catholic priest as a creative consultant to help with the more religious aspects of the story.

I'm Catholic and I have seen every single episode from the beginning. The whole God/angel talk only began a couple seasons ago. Don't expect the Winchester boys to be all for God or angels because they are kind of in the middle. A lot of the angels haven't been the nicest people to them. But, remember, it is just fiction. Even if they are saying negative things about the angels, it's definitely understandable when you see the situation they are in and the things that have happened to them. So, when it comes to my being Catholic, I don't take the show too seriously. It's definitely worth watching, though! It's one of my favorites!

i've watched it since the first episode and havent missd one! in fact ive seen every episode at least 5 times! (little sad! but hey).

I am a chrsitian and i love the show. It is heavy on mythology and there is many discussions on heaven, hell, God - angels are called douchebags and ***** etc however this is just the way the show rolls. Everything gets a little touch. I shouldnt think it would offend you terribly even if you are a serious catholic. My friend isnt a huge fan and she is a baptist. i think the only way to know is watch some more episodes. It is just a story and there is no reason to feel bad. If it isnt what you believe in real-life you arent doing anything wrong!

good luck x

Well I'm guessing shows that satirize your savior is a no-no, but shows such as South Park and what not often use Jesus as a medium in getting their message across regarding the fallacies of the Church, or the way some people take the Bible all too literally. So although the image of Jesus maybe disturbing and outright offensive, it gives Christians the opportunity to question their beliefs. And personally I believe that if person never questions their own beliefs then they will never fully understand them. So my advice would be thus, if it shames you to watch the cartoons then dont watch, but if your willing to keep an open mind and are confident in your religion, watch the show with good humor and try to find the message the writers are trying to convey.

I don't know if I can really answer your question because I am not Catholic but as a christian, I see nothing wrong with watching it. I have not missed an episode and what I get out of it is that the Winchester boys, their dad before them and many others are fighting evil and trying to rid the world of it. The ways they sacrifice to help God fearing people, tells me how dedicated they are to their goal. I hope this helps even a little.

I figure that if you like the show, then you should watch it. you don't have to believe the plot to like it. I don't believe in a higher power, but in supernatural Castiel is an angel, and there is a god. The creator Eric Kripke incorporates different religions into the show, so it's a mix of everything I guess. From using the pentagram as a protection symbol, to the quest to find god, and stop the devil.

Hope this helped :)

It really is not meant to be offensive towards Catholics, they just discuss angels and demons and that sort of thing.

Watch it as fiction. Do not take your religion from it. If you see it as just pure entertainment, then it should be OK, but if you can't separate that from your faith beliefs then don't watch, it will mess you up.
