I just started watching Degrassi at my friends house but I have no idea what season I was watching and where do I even begin to continue. Would I be confused if I just watched whenever it's on or do you think I should go on youtube or some other site and watch from the very beginning. All I know is that I watched the episodes with Rick when he shot Jimmy, when Rick returns to Degrassi, and episodes about Sean and Ellie. What season was it? What's the first episode ever called?

The very first episode of Degrassi was technically called Kiss Me, Steph. It was made in 1987. The series then was called Degrassi Jr High. From Degrassi Jr High, they made Degrassi High, and then quite a few years later, they make Degrassi The Next Generation. Some people on Degrassi TNG such as, Spike (Emma's mom), Snake (Mr. Simpson), Joey (Craig's step dad), Caitlin (Journalist), and Mr. Radich (the principal), were apart of the original cast on Degrassi Jr. High and Degrassi High. Anywho, if you want to only follow the new class (The Next Generation), you can. You won't always understand (at least, not right away) some of the things they talk about or reference from Jr High and High. Kind of confusing, I know. The first episode of TNG is called Mother and Child Reunion. You first meet a few of the main characters, and you meet some of the old characters as well. It's very very hard to watch TNG in the middle of the series. To fully understand you need to watch from the beginning, but to fully know everything that's going on, you should give Degrassi Jr High and High a shot. I purchased the dvds from Amazon, but I'm sure you can find some place to download them. Sorry if this was confusing.

Degrassi is a very... dramatic... series. Alot happens in just one or two episodes. Therefore it would be best to start from Episode 1, which is Mother and Child Reunion.

"What season was it?"

What season was what?

Rick shot Jimmy in the episode "Time Stands Still" which was in Season 4.

I think you watched them out of order. Rick never returns to Degrassi after the shooting, because well... I'll let you watch the series in order. He does come back after a certain event in Season 3... I can't remember which episode, sorry.

And there were many episodes about Sean and Ellie.

Yeah, it would be best to watch them in order. Also an interesting fact is that most (with the exception of one or two) episodes are named after song titles from the 80's, in homage to it's predecessor.

It started out as "the kids of degrassi street" running from 1979-1986. It was followed by "degrassi jr high" from 1987-1989. After that it was "degrassi high" from 1989-1991. Followed by "degrassi the next generation" 2001-now. Emma who was technically the main character in "the next generation" made her debut in "degrassi high" as the illegitment child of Christine "spike" nelson and Shane Mckay, both previous characters. If you want the beginning of the series on teen nick, id start with the episodes from 2001. Hope this helps. :)
