Lost fans refresh my memory about penny and desmond first meeting I'm a little confused??

correct me if I am wrong but when desmond first met penny he was in a cafe and he was telling penny how he wanted to do this sail boat race around the world? he didn't really know penny but penny told him she knew where he could get a boat. I remember thinging why would a total stranger give desmond her daddy's boat. so they only just met when desmond set sail and ended up on the island right?? so when did desmond have time to break up with her?? and when and how did he know her while in the military? the time line just dosen't fit with me. he met penny got her boat and landed on the island. he didn't know her before that. and why was he going to race in the first place was it to win over penny's dad? or for the prize money? tell me what did I miss in that first flash back episode? does anyone have that episode and can check it out for me? also desmond was affected with radiation when the hatch blew up but so was locke and there was one other or two other people in there with them?

The woman in the cafe that you’re recalling was Libby. Her husband had just passed away and once she heard Desmond’s story about Penny, Penny’s father and the boat trip, she said her husband would have wanted Desmond to use the boat.



As for the timeline of Penny. Des was kicked out of the monastery (he was found drinking the wine). As he was leaving, he helped load the boxes of wine into a truck that was driven by Penny. This was the first time he met Penny. Penny invited Des to help her deliver the wine and this is how they started off. I believe then he was in the military, where he ended up being jailed and getting a dishonorable discharge. Once he got out of jail, that is when Penny’s dad said that Penny was getting married and offered him money to leave her alone (also all the letters he had written to Penny while in jail were never given to Penny, the father had them all).



As for the boat race itself, I think that was more to prove to himself that he was worthy of her (and also to show Penny’s father this).



If you have the time, you can watch the episodes on abc.com since ABC has every episode on there. I would suggest that you watch season 1 Live Together, Die Alone. Around the 15:30 mark, Desmond meets Libby and you’ll be able to see the exact conversation regarding the boat. Also, episode Catch-22 on season 2 explains how Desmond met Penny after the monastery (around the 38:40 mark).

No, Penny first met Desmond as he was leaving the monks. Actually Hurley's girlfriend gave Desmond the boat. That's why you are confused. Locke is the only other living survivor of the hatch...Mr Echo & Charlie were the other two.

Hurley's girlfriend (Libby) is the person who was also a patient at the Health Institute with Hurley-



It's my recollection that Hurley did not remember this when Libby and he met on the island after the crash (she was a Talley I believe) - she died during season 2 (or was it 3?) by being shot at by someone in Desmond's lair (I can't remember the name of that station).



I think that the Libby was a "bit off of her rocker" and for whatever reason when she met Desmond in the airport cafe, gave him the boat.
