On the show "ER" the character Gates has nickname for Neela, he calls her "mayday". Does anyone know why?

In the episode "Dying Is Easy", Tony and Neela are working on a patient. Neela is pressing the woman's ribs trying to find out which one is broken and the woman winces in pain. Tony makes a joke to the patient by saying “She’s into S&M, if you want her to stop – just say ‘Mayday’ – it’s the safe word”. Neela presses down on the ribs again, prompting a cry of “Mayday, Mayday!” from her patient. From then on, he started calling her Mayday.

Actually... Gates first calls Neela in season 12 episode 6, "2 Ships"when he was a paramedic and ot was his second episode, she hated it.

Check again Fantasma. For it is that in episode 4 of season 14, Dr. Gates says it is because MayDay is his favorite James Bond girl.
