I, personally, would recommend giving Lost a try as hearing the plot is bad doesn't mean much. Yes, the plot is intricate and requires concentration, but if you like "thinking" dramas, you might like it. I would put the first and fourth seasons up against anything else.

Anyway, other shows...

Action/Adventure

24. It is about a government agent who each season has 24 hours (told in real time) to stop a disaster. It is (obviously) a serialized drama that at its best was a huge adrenaline rush. The seasons varied in quality, but at its best, it was can't miss television. The first 6 seasons are on DVD, with the seventh starting this winter.

La Femme Nikita. The show was about an innocent woman who was framed and forced to work for a covert spy operation who believed that the ends always justified the means. It was very suspenseful, as no one was safe, the stories were complex, rather than black and white, and the characters were interesting. Each season has some kind of overall plot to tie it together, whether it was Nikita's attempts to escape (season 1) or other plots in later seasons that I will not spoil for you. All five seasons are on DVD.

The Pretender. The show is about a genius who can become anyone he wants to be. He was raised by an evil group called The Centre. He escaped and is trying to atone for his sins by helping people out, while The Centre is chasing him, trying to capture him again. It's similar to Prison Break, because it has the chase element and the brain candy element. Their are a few plots that tie the series together, from the chase for Jarod, to the quest by Jarod to find his family, to the machinations of The Centre, to the mystery surrounding the death of Miss Parker's mother. The entire four seasons are on DVD.

Burn Notice. It is about a spy who was "burned" and cannot work as a spy any more and is sentenced to live in Miami. The overarching plot is that of the spy trying to get reinstated, but each week he also helps out a person in need. This is all usually accomplished with a lot of dry humor. ("Sometimes, the truth hurts. In these situations, I recommend lying.") The first season is out on DVD now, and the second season will resume in January.

Chuck. It is about a nerdy guy (who works at a "Best Buy"-type store) who accidentally gets an entire spy database downloaded into his brain, such that he now has to work as a secret agent. Again, interesting characters, plus it is one of the most truly entertaining just for entertainment's sake; true brain candy. There are a few overall plots, but it is mostly lighthearted fare, rather than deep and meaningful.

Supernatural/Sci-Fi

Battlestar Galactica. It is about a group of people who are the sole remnants of humanity after a race of robots (called cylons) exterminates the rest. While it is an extremely sci-fi premise, the show itself is much more of a character drama, with a lot of complexities and intricacies. It (like 24) is a true serialized drama, with little things from one episode leading to events in another episode. Plus there is the overall theme of the fate of humanity. The first 3 seasons are on DVD, with the first half of the fourth due on DVD in January. (The second half of the fourth season kicks off just after the DVD release.)

The X-Files. I'm assuming you know about this one, as it was a pop-culture phenomenon, but basically it was about two FBI agents who searched for "The Truth" while investigating paranormal crimes. I, personally, prefer the "monster of the week" storylines, but as you seem to prefer the more in-depth storylines, it definitely has that, with conspiracies running all the way through it. It lasted for nine seasons, which are all on DVD.

Crime Shows...

NCIS. It is a crime procedural, but it is so much more about the characters and their interactions with each other. They seem to have a genuine affection for each other. Plus, the shows are a very good mix of humor and drama. If you want more overarching storylines vs. what you call the "short stories" of CSI, I'd recommend mostly the third through fifth seasons, each of which had an overall plot amidst the single stories. The first five seasons are on DVD, with the sixth airing now.

Other crime shows tend to be more "short story" format. Dexter's a possibility, if you like the idea of a serial killer "hero".

1st of All. Supernatural is my favorite show, good choice.

You might also like Smallville. It's on the same night as supernatural, and you can buy all the seasons.

House. It has the solving mystery theme like CSI but with more plot. However it is not a soap opera like Grey's Anatomy.

Burn Notice. It's on it's off season right now but they may still be playing it. It's on USA. About ex-spy. Good plot, lots of action.

Numb3rs. It can be a little boring, but has more of a plot than CSI so I thought I would throw it out there.

If you want to understand what's going on but are not going to rent them, try surfthechannel.com. It will have almost every episode of all of these.

Grey's Anatomy: its a medical drama about a group of surgeons working at Seattle Grace Hospital. the show centers Meredith Grey and her life as a resident at the hospital.

Teen Wolf: the series revolves around social outcast Scott Mccall, a high school student living in Beacon Hills. Scott's life drastically changes when he is bitten by a werewolf, becoming one himself. he must henceforth learn to balance his problematic new identity with his day-to-day teenage life.

The Vampire Diaries: the series follows the life of Elena Gilbert, a teenage girl who falls deeply in love with a 163-year-old vampire named Stefan Salvatore. their relationship becomes increasingly complicated as Stefan's vicious, malevolent and mysterious older brother, Damon Salvatore, returns with a plan to wreak havoc on the town, seeking revenge against his younger brother for turning him into a vampire against his will. because Elena resembles their past love Katherine Pierce, Damon also begins to fall in love with Elena. it is revealed that Elena is a descendant of Katherine, who eventually returns with plans against the trio. Elena undergoes many hardships and deaths of close family members and loved ones throughout her high school experience

Orange Is The New Black: the series revolves around Piper Chapman, a woman living in New York City, who is sentenced to 15 months in a woman's federal prison called Litchfield Penitentiary. she has been convicted of transporting a suitcase full of drug money for her former girlfriend, Alex Vause, an international drug dealer. the offense has occurred ten years prior to the start of the series, and in that time Piper has moved on to a quiet, law-abiding life among New York's upper middle class, so her sudden and unexpected arrest seriously disrupts her relationship with her fiancé and her family. in prison, Piper is reunited with Alex, and they re-examine their relationship and deal with their fellow prisoners. the show often shows flashbacks of significant events from the past of various inmates. these flashbacks may explain how the inmate came to be in prison or otherwise further develop the characters backstory.

The Blacklist: Raymond "Red" Reddington, a former officer of the United States Navy who disappeared twenty years earlier, before becoming one of the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives, surrenders himself to Assistant Director Harold Cooper at FBI Headquarters in Washington DC. taken to an FBI 'black site', Reddington reclaims to share the FBI's interest in getting rid of criminals and terrorists he has associated with, that are so dangerous and devious that Cooper is unaware of even their existence. he offers Cooper his knowledge and assistance on two conditions: immunity from prosecution and working exclusively with Elizabeth Keen, a rookie profiler newly assigned to Cooper.

American Horror Story:

Season 1- Murder House- The first season, retroactively titled American Horror Story: Murder House, is about infidelity. The story takes place in 2011 and follows the Harmon family: psychiatrist Ben, his wife Vivien, and their teenage daughter Violet, who move from Boston to Los Angeles after Vivien has a miscarriage and Ben has an affair. The Harmons move into a restored mansion and soon encounter the home's former residents, the Langdons – Constance and her two children, Tate and Addie – and the disfigured Larry Harvey. Ben and Vivien try to rekindle their relationship, as Violet, suffering from depression, finds comfort with Tate. The Langdons and Larry frequently influence the Harmons' lives, as the family discovers that the home is haunted by the ghosts of anyone who has ever died on the property.

Season 2-Asylum-The second season, titled American Horror Story: Asylum, is about sanity. The story takes place in 1964 and follows the patients, doctors and nuns who occupy the Briarcliff Mental Institution, founded to treat and house the criminally insane. The wardens who run the institution include the stern Sister Jude, her protégé Sister Mary Eunice and the founder of the institution, Monsignor Timothy Howard. The doctors charged with treating the patients at the asylum include psychiatrist Dr. Oliver Thredson and the sadistic scientist Dr. Arthur Arden. The patients, many of whom claim to be unjustly institutionalized, include lesbian journalist Lana Winters, accused serial killer Kit Walker, nymphomaniac Shelley and alleged murderer Grace Bertrand. Briarcliff's inhabitants are routinely subject to supernatural and scientific influences, including demonic possession and extraterrestrial abduction.

Season 3-Coven-The third season, titled American Horror Story: Coven, is about oppression; specifically, the oppression of marginalized groups and female empowerment. After the Salem witch trials, descendants of the witches who survived are nearly extinct and are in danger once again. Those who share this genetic affliction are being subjected to strange and violent attacks. A mysterious all-girls boarding school has opened in New Orleans to protect and house young women who carry this unique bloodline, and keep them from the dangers of the outside world. The long-absent Supreme, and most powerful witch of her generation, Fiona Goode, arrives to ensure the safety of the Coven, but also to fulfill her own hidden agenda. Fiona's daughter, Cordelia, teaches at the school and welcomes its newest student, Zoe Benson, who harbors her own harrowing secret. Events reveal a long-held rivalry between the witches of Salem and the voodoo practitioners of New Orleans, as well as a historic grudge between Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau and socialite serial killer Delphine LaLaurie. Other themes include witchcraft, voodoo, racism, and family, such as the relationships between mothers and daughters. The season is set primarily in the modern day and includes flashbacks to the early 1970s and the 1830s.

Season 4-Freak Show-The fourth season, titled American Horror Story: Freak Show, is about discrimination, particularly people who are classified as "freaks" by the public. The story takes place in 1952 in the quiet town of Jupiter, Florida and follows a struggling freak show led by Elsa Mars. Decades have passed since the public has looked upon freak shows as a form of entertainment, but Elsa dreams of finding a home for her "monsters", as well as her own fame. When conjoined twins Bette and Dot Tattler are taken to the hospital, Elsa sees her chance to finally drum up some business for her sideshow, hoping the two sisters will save her troupe once and for all. Other members include Jimmy Darling, a boy born with syndactyly who dreams of leaving the carny life behind and living a normal life. Jimmy's mother, the bearded lady Ethel Darling, is Elsa's second in command and maintains law and order under the tent. A Strongman from Ethel's troubled past named Dell Toledo, and his three-breasted wife, Desiree Dupree, make waves when they arrive at the sideshow. In a time when the era of television is beginning to reign high above sideshow acts, these individuals must overcome those who persecute them based on their looks. However, as events unfold, it is revealed that multiple dark entities have taken up residence in Jupiter, with all of their eyes being set on the freaks.

Friends: Rachel Green flees her wedding day and seeks out childhood friend Monica Geller, a New York City chef. They become roommates, and Rachel joins Monica's social circle of single people in their mid-20s: struggling actor Joey Tribbiani, business professional Chandler Bing, masseuse and musician Phoebe Buffay, and newly divorced paleontologist Ross Geller, Monica's older brother. To support herself, Rachel becomes a waitress at Central Perk, a Manhattan coffeehouse where the group often hangs out; when not there, the six are usually at Monica and Rachel's nearby West Village apartment, or Joey and Chandler's across the hall. Episodes typically depict the friends' comedic and romantic adventures and career issues, such as Joey auditioning for roles or Rachel seeking jobs in the fashion industry. The six characters each have many dates and serious relationships, such as Monica with Richard Burke and Ross with Emily Waltham. Ross and Rachel's intermittent relationship is the most often-recurring storyline; during the ten seasons of the show they repeatedly date and break up, even while Ross briefly marries Emily, he and Rachel have a child, Chandler and Monica date and marry each other, and Phoebe marries Mike Hannigan. Other frequently recurring characters include Ross and Monica's parents in Long Island, Ross's ex-wife and their son, Central Perk barista Gunther, and Chandler's ex-girlfriend Janice, and Phoebe's twin sister Ursula.
